Statement of intent-
Within architecture I am eager to complete a fascinating project exploring the architecture within Manchester, the history of Manchester and the Mancunian culture. I want to complete a project exploring the older architecture and also the more new modern architecture within Manchester. I would like to take at look at Manchester during the night hoping for more lifeless, macabre images and take the same picture during the day showing the contrast, hopefully capturing a lively, busy and loud city through these still images. The reason I have chosen this project is, as well as my love for the city, is because I know so much about the city and have lived here my whole life, I would also love to learn and visit new places and things in my city. On our upcoming trip I intend to capture many fascinating pictures of the older side of Manchester as well as the more modern side of Manchester, capturing the contrast. Once I have taken these images I intend to then go out in my spare time during the night, or when its dark outside, I will then capture the same pictures as I did during the day hoping to capture the same images during the night, showing the contrast and change in mood. During this project I also, as Manchester is so famous for its football, want to picture Old Trafford (the Manchester united stadium) and then capture the Etihad Stadium ( the Manchester City ground), capture the emotion and atmosphere within these worlds.
Once I have collected all my images, a sufficient amount, I will attempt to edit them in a way that I can more easily show the contrast between the bright, alive and joyful day and the dark, gloomy , more depressing nighttime images, maybe including a dark silhouette for a dramatic affect. Another edit I could take a look into could be displaying the rivalry within Mancunian football between City and United Maybe going to both on match days and capturing the passion that will be present. Towards Christmas time, when it begins getting darker earlier I am going to head out while its dark and try capture the festive joy while it is dark. A photographer I could link my work too is Ekaterina Mishchenkova who takes fascinating images of cities and urban spaces during the night, they also take a lot of pictures of festive scenes within cities, often including fireworks and festive lights, I could be inspired by his work. Once I have collected a good amount of images I intend on editing these images, I am interested in editing these pictures in a neon, futuristic way, maybe being inspired by photographers such as, Liam Wong, a Scottish photographer and games designer. Liam expertly edits and takes these pictures in such a futuristic way that I really would like to help inspire the work I go on to produce within architecture,
As mentioned previously, through my architectural images, I hope to capture Mancunian culture and beauty. I also might end up going out in my spare time with a video camera and try capture a fascinating and interesting video of Manchester, hoping that the video allows me to show more emotion through audio and moving pictures, allowing me to capture more interesting content and more fascinating stories. I strongly believe the art of film and video is very fascinating and opportunistic to help me achieve the best grade possible. I can also, if videos are taken, use music to influence the mood of my work, I can edit these videos on video editors such as Premier-Pro and Filmora.
Overall, I am happy and excited for this architectural project, I believe it is an opportunity for me to show off my work and ability through pictures, videos and edits. I will create detailed written work and moldboards, using other photographers and videographers to help inspire my work, I will be creating moldboards and detailed written pieces of them.

Stephanie Jung
Stephanie Jung is a German modern, experimental photographer, she often captures very chaotic city landscapes and also processes these pictures, this results in a bright, beautiful and colorful image filled with bright, blinding lights and modern city scenes. She often layers her picture managing to capture many stories within a single image.
Andrew Prokos
Andrew Prokos is an American photographer primarily based in New York famous for his modern city picture with a cool, abstract affect. He uses patterns, colors, shapes and geographical features to create interesting, meaningful images, he usually captures his photos in urban, city landscapes. This picture of the Brazilian capital, created by architectural photographer Andrew Prokos, is among the winners at the International Photography Awards competition. Entitled “Niemeyer’s Brasilia” the series of photographs capture the surreal architecture of Oscar Niemeyer, who shaped the Brazilian capital for over 50 years.
In the picture, I have used as an example, you can see how Andrew has used the reflection of the still water to create a symmetrical mirror image of the architectural landscape, he purposefully chooses this time of day to take the image as the sky is a moody, darker shade of blue making the buildings stand out and the reflection on the water stand out even more. The blue, peaceful lighting that is present in this image creates a somber, macabre and lonely atmosphere as this shade of blue is often linked with these emotions. The picture contains two round, obscure buildings on both sides, a more tall set of regular towers, connected together and a thin layer of rooms directly running through the center of the image, a small number of the rooms contain light and, apart from natural light, this is the only light present in the picture. The darker atmosphere also makes the artificial, yellowish, light coming from the building stand out, he uses this line of yellow light to act as a wall between the surreal blue sky and the darker reflection of the blue sky, this creates a nice effect for the viewer. The sky creates a natural transition in color as, in the top half of the image, the sky color goes from and darker shade of blue, just above the buildings, to a lighter shade of blue going up, within the lighter half of the top half of the image there is a cloud, darker then the surrounding's, this makes a contrast and brings the viewers attention the that part of the image. The bottom half of the image, unlike the top, goes light near the middle to dark at the bottom the reflection of the cloud has also been captured. Everything within this picture has a really smooth modern texture, including the sky, everything except the middle two building that a more rough textured texture. Within the middle strip of building that runs through the picture the pattern on the rooms creates a cool texture in the image. Andrew has managed to capture an affect of rule of thirds, due to the 3 tall buildings running across this image in both real life and the reflection.
Personally I really like this piece of work as I admire how Andrew cleverly uses the line of modern architecture as a line separating the sky from the reflection. I assume he used a tripod to manage to capture this perfect contrast between the top and the bottom and to make sure the buildings are directly in the middle. The line of building going across the center of this image creates a strong leading line, there is another strong leading line created by the tallest tower in the center, as well as this, the reflection of the tower is also a strong leading line, these three leading lines cause the viewers eyes to look all over the image straight away. A very high shutter speed has been used to capture the crisp finish, I think this as the detail in the reflection, sky and buildings is immaculate and a fast shutter speed must have been used to capture this due to how crystal clear it is, I also assume a low ISO has been used, I have been lead to think this as, judging by the time of day this picture was taken and the lighting achieved in the picture, a low ISO must have been used. For the F-Stop, judging by how crisp and detailed the image is, I think a high F-Stop has been used, maybe around f/16. The image has been split into 3 sections horizontally with the three buildings, but cleverly this image has been split into just into two parts vertically using the line between the reflection and the sky as a leading line - with the building running across it on both sides. The photographer has cleverly chosen the perfect time of day to take this image as the lighting is ideal and there is no wind, this is good as it causes the water to be completely still allowing him to be able to capture this perfect reflection. The photographer has used a depth of field as he has 3 sections of depth, the foreground, middle ground and background. In the fore ground there is clear, blue, still water that holds the reflection of the buildings and lights, In the middle grounds there a 4 abstract, modern buildings, the middle two being connected slightly and in the background there is a beautiful blue sky. The shot has been perfectly framed, leading me to believe they have used a tripod to capture this image, the aperture of the image is low as the lighting is rather dark. Andrew has placed his tripod (or just camera) in such a way that the middle line ,separating the top of the image - the sky - and the bottom of the image - the water, is directly in the middle this creates the affect of symmetry horizontally as the same image has been flipped on the reflection.
I will try and use some of the techniques Andrew has used within his work in my own, trying to capture the obscurity of the image and imitate the lighting and time of day in the image. In my work. I wont to try and capture a lonely feeling similar to how Andrew has, he did this by making most of the image just empty space and sky and filling the center with architecture, to help him do this he has, in a way, used the rule of thirds, which I can magpie and use within my own work. I will try and imamate his techniques and feeling through film.
Ben Harrison
This picture was taken by Ben Harrison in England during the 21st century, within the image he has captured the unusual curvature of a building in England. This picture represents the unusual modern architecture within England. The theme is Modern architecture, and it highlights and communicates the unusual modern architecture found within Britain. Somehow it looks edited and unrealistic but it is just an unusually shaped building. This image looks somewhat processed with neon lines going across the floor and some of the colors looking as if they have been enhanced. It communicates the modern, unusual architecture found across the world today. The image has been taken at a nice time of day and time of year causing the sky to appear purple and pale blue making the whole picture look a lot better. The lines that have been added make the already futuristic architecture look even more modern and futuristic with a ci-fi feeling on the image. Ben Harrison is an experienced photographer, he has a 12 year old photography business based in Don caster, he like picturing landscapes around England but also does architectural photography, photographing the exterior of buildings and the interior of buildings.
This picture uses the use of a central focal, cleverly placing the building right in the middle of the image which make the reader focus on it, as well as this Ben has chosen this angle to take the picture from the make the curvature in the building stand out and look more noticeable, making the most of the opportunity. Ben has used the Rule of thirds to truly capture the aspects of this unusual architecture and split the picture into 3 important sections. The theme of this work is exploring the unusual modern architecture, and unusual shapes within architecture, this subject has really grown and become more common in the 21st century as more abstract buildings have popped up and more modern photographers have really jumped jumped at the opportunity to really capture these buildings. Ben Harrison has purposefully chosen to take this picture at this time of day as the effect that the sun gives is good and makes the building stand out more. The photographer uses the streets as strong leading lines, this causes the viewer's eyes to follow along the street and view all the buildings. The shapes of the building is really interesting and obscure it has been specifically chosen by the photographer as it looks really abstract, it is so abstract and obscure that I question weather or weather not the curvature has been exaggerated on an editing software.
Ben Harrison is a Doncaster born photographer who uses drones and cameras to photograph architecture around Britain and explores old and new architecture in Britain. In this picture he may have used a tripod to perfectly capture the buildings and has probably used a low shutter speed to capture this image, I think this because of how crisp this picture has turned out and how clear and bright the image is. I suspect the ISO used in this image was around 200 once again because of the bright but not to bright finish and the clear and detailed final image. This image is landscape and there is a foreground and a background. In the foreground you can see some buildings and in the background you can see a bright blue sky. I think Harrison has used a tripod to take this image to perfect the level and balance of the image, he has done this to make sure it has a crisp, perfect level and balance. To capture the cool neon lines that are present on the road the photographer has set his camera up at the side of the road with the desired angle and frame and turned his shutter speed really low, this causes the lights on cars to be dragged out and create the affect present.
In my opinion this picture is really good and I would like to incorporate something similar within my work. I admire the architecture explored within this image and I also like the slight enhancements and edits made to truly capture all aspects in this image and capture this wonderful architecture. Within my work, similarly to this image, I would like to incorporate unusual modern architecture. I also really want to capture more modern architecture and more modern techniques and edits to improve my work and its also part of my style.

Paris
Cathedral-
Coach journey-
Best This is my best picture from this section as I believe the lighting achieved in this image was the best. This may have been down to the ISO I used at around 400 or because of the white balance I used, probably daytime. The aperture is nice and I believe it is well focused causing the plane gliding through the sky really clear and the grass and plants bright green. I believe that the plane gliding through he sky right in the center of the image is really intriguing for the reader and make them more interested. The contrast in color between the blue sky and the green ground creates a cool affect. As I was in a moving vehicle I was required to used a fast shutter speed to ensure the picture did not turn out to be blurry.
|
WorstThis is my worst picture from the section as I personally do not like how the image isn't balance nor focused. I also do not like the reflection I have accidentally captured in this image. This picture could have been improved massively if I had taken my time and made sure all my camera settings where on point. This may be due to the shutter speed being too low, this is because when you are taking pictures through the window of a moving vehicle the shutter speed needs to be high, otherwise the image will turn out blurry.

Disney land-
Paris architecture-
BestThis is my best picture from this section as I really like the angle I have caught of the Eifel tower. I think the Eiffel tower is really well centred and admire how it climbs up the picture, gradually getting thinner as it goes up. I have also captured a good example of tourism and joy with people excited and taking pictures of the exceptional architecture. To achieve this image I used a medium ISO and daytime white balance.
|
WorstThis is my worst picture from this section as I do not like how the trees have got in the way, I also think the image is off centered and off balance. This could have been avoided if I took my time when taking the photo or even chose to use a tripod when taking the image. Other then that, the camera settings were correct in order to capture a good picture if I had taken the necessary precautions.
|
View of Paris-
BestI really like this picture as I think the ratio of sky to land is well balanced, intriguing and makes the focus and subject of the image be the architecture around Paris. As well as this the ISO has resulted in a clear crisp finish to the picture, the white balance and shutter speed was also perfect for the picture I was trying to create. I like the angle of this picture as I admire the emphasis on the river running through the bottom half of the image, I believe overall it is a really pretty landscape that I have captured.
|
WorstThis is my worst picture from this section as I do not like how the picture is split and believe that the trees are clocking most of the view I intended to photograph. As well as this I do not like how I have caught the side of a woman's head and the top of a women head in the far right of the image, I believe these factors ruin the image, causing it to be the worst picture from this section of photographs.

Manchester Shoot(daytime)-
Old Trafford Cricket ground-
Best I have chosen this picture as my best from this section as I believe the lighting in this image is ideal and the member of the public captured adds to the image. As well as this the image ratio and how its been divided is splendid, the oncoming tram the shadows on the tracks and as well as all of this the greenery and blue sky I have managed to capture all create such a spectacular picture. I have used quite a average ISO of around 200 and the white balance has presumably been set to daytime/auto. Everything stated have meant that I believe this is my best picture from this section.
|
Worst
This image has turned out blurry and the image contents of the image are not central creating a rather unpleasant image. It appears that I rushed when capturing this image subsequently resulting in a blurry image. The lighting in this image is also off this may have been due to my ISO being unintentionally low or my white balance being off. However, everything I have listed lead to this image being the worst from the images I took in this section.
|
Tram Journey-
Tram stop too Piccadilly Gardens-
BestPersonally this is my best image from this section of photos, what makes it gain this title I believe is the beautiful lighting and fascinating architecture caught. I also took this image while on a moving tram and despite the electrical weir I have accidently caught and the slight section of tram wall in the far right of the image I believe this image is my best from this section. As well as all stated previously, I believe the Iso used in this image (crucial to be correct when outdoors) brings this picture to life, it looks as though I have used a rather low ISO and a daytime white balance due to the lighting when taking this image.
|
WorstIn this image, although I have managed to use the correct camera settings, I have accidentally caught my finger in the frame of the image, this has subsequently lead to a rough finish and I rushed look, ruining a potentially good image. Other than that the camera setting where correct to capture a good image if I had taken the necessary precautions.
|
Library-
BestThis is my best picture from this selection of images as, although being slightly blurry, I believe that adds to the image as it is capturing an incredibly old building. I have also used a good white balance and ISO, I can tell this from the good lighting I have achieved in this image. As well as everything stated previously I believe the architecture in this image is really fascinating, this fits the theme and was the reason I took this picture.
|
WorstI believe this is my worst image as I have accidentally captured a lamppost and it has turned out blurry, I believe this ruins the image. On top of this the image is of centre and wonky. All of this has lead me to decide this was my worst picture from this section.
|
Piccadilly Gardens-
BestI have decided that this is my best picture from this section of images as the building is well centred and I have captured everything I intended, a large section of the building and a large section filled with plain blue sky, creating a cool affect to the viewer. I believe the lighting (due to the white balance) is perfect and the iso I used, once again rather low, has lead to this image being beautiful. I also like how I have captured the logo/name of the tower creating a cool affect
|
WorstAlthough good camera settings and good idea this image ended being of center and unpleasant to look at leading me to decide it is the weakest out the selection of images in this section. Due to the camera being off center the corner of the building isn't in shot, leading to an unprofessional finish overall. Other then that, the camera settings and the idea are fine and if I had focused more when taking the photo it would have been a good result.
|
Statue-
BestThis is my best image from this section as it shows the contrast between modern and vintage, with a vintage statue of Queen Victoria in front of two identical modern building on either side, I like the affect this creates. I also admire the camera settings a chose to use for the image as it has resulted in the image having good lighting, I have (once again) used a low ISO and a good shutter speed for daytime images. All of this has lead me to decide this to be my favourite image from this section.
|
WorstThis is my worst image from this section as I do not like how the image is of centred and wonky. If this want the case this image would have been rather good, despite the dull lighting.
|
Northern Quater-
BestI believe this is my best picture as I really admire the lighting in the image and the clean finish I have achieved. The bricks look really clean and detailed, the reason I have achieved a really clean finish is because of the camera settings I have used, it looks as though I have used a white balance of shaded, helping achieve the darker and more clear building. I also assume I have used a ISO of about 200 achieving the really clear look.
|
WorstThis is my worst image from this section as the contents of the image are blurry and off centered. If this wasn't the case this would have been a good picture, so, when I realized it was blurry I re took the image3 to get a good one, that wasn't blurry or off center.
|
Athlecks-
BestThis is my best picture from this section as I really admire the lighting I have achieved in this image. The pale, white light in this images adds so much to the image making the many posters pop out and the bright colors within them pop out. The shiny material used on the banister of the staircase reflects the white light creating a cool affect and making the material stand out. I have used a medium ISO and an indoor white balance. All of this has lead e to choose this as my best picture from this section.
|
WorstI do not like this image as the lighting is atrocious and the frame is off center. The reason this has happened might of been a wrong ISO used, a wrong white balance used and I might have rushed taking this picture. Overall this picture has more negatives then positives and that is why I have chosen it as my worst.
|
Market Street-
BestThis is my best picture as, not only only it focused, clear, balanced and bright, it also contains very good focusses , the three young men happy and singing ad also the old, cobble path they are stood on. I think all this not only shows the mancunian architecture but also the mancunian spirit. The image was taken during the day, because of this I was required to used a medium ISO and a daylight whit balance to make sure the image wasn't over exposed or to dark. I also held the camera very straight meaning the image is centered and the subjects are right in the middle.
|
WorstThis is my worst picture from this section because it looks as though a rushed when taking the picture which has not lead to me capturing the desired contents and the image turning out slightly blurry. It is unclear what the picture is of and there is no clear subject of the picture. Overall, all the factors stated previously have lead me to believe this was my worst picture from this section.
|
Arndale-
Best |
Worst |
I believe this is my best picture from this section because, I like has the bottom of the bridge has been capture in such a way that causes it to run from the top of the image to the bottom of the image, I believe the bridge is well centered and I do not think the image is too blurry, this may have been due to me using a good ISO for being outside, of around 200.,
|
I believe this is my worst image from this section as, although the camera setting are alright, I have accidentally caught the tree right in front of the bridge which was meant to be the main focus, for that reason I think this is my worst image.
|
Buildings-
Best |
Worst |
This is my best picture from this section as I admire the lighting achieved in this image, I achieved this be editing my iso to a high number, my white balance to a high number and turning up my exposure. In this image I also like how ,although the focus of the image is on the old fashioned building, I have captured part of a bright, green tree, this adds color and excitement to the image.
|
This is my worst picture from this section as it has turned out blurry and out of focus, this may have been down to me rushing to take the image or because of bad camera settings.
|
Cathedral-
BestThis is my best image from this section as, as well as it being the most clear and in focus image, it has the clearest, best shot of the cathedral. Because of the low ISO used, probably around 100-200 (judging by the daylight present) and the medium white balance and exposure used has caused the bright sunny day to be perfectly captured, helping me achieve a clear, crisp image of the Manchester cathedral. Due to the time of day and the time of year I have had to make sure the exposure I used in this image was perfect to make sure it didn't end up being to over exposed or under exposed.
|
WorstThis is my worst image from this section as it has turned out blurry and out of focus. As well as this it is off centered and off balanced. The blurry, out of focused look may have been caused due to me rushing to take the image or moving while taking the image. Overall, this image is not very interesting, nor is it clear; this is way I have chosen it as my worst image.
|
Walking around Manchester-
BestThis is my best picture from this section as the camera settings maximize the features in the image. I really like how I have caught the sun peaking through round the side of the building creating a cool affect for the viewer. I also think this picture is good as it is not too bright, although the glaring sun, this may be due to good camera setting like a good white balance avoiding the picture becoming to bright. It may also be due to the ISO I used which would have been around average in terms of being daylight, between 200-400.
|
WorstThis is my worst picture from this section as the lighting achieved within the image was really bad in my opinion and I do not like how the image is slightly off center and slightly off balanced. This may be due to me rushing to take this image or simply because of bad lighting in the location I took the picture.
|
Modern-
BestThis is my best picture from this section as I really like the effect created by the three building being layered over one another, I think it creates a really modern look (sticking to the theme). I think the image is crisp and clear, this was achieved by using a low ISO and the daylight setting on white balance. I also think the exposure is at the perfect level to maximize the use of reflection and glimer of the beautiful clear glass.
|
WorstThis is my worst picture from this section as I do not like how the buildings and other contents within the image are slightly of centered and overall it is unclear what is in this image. This may be due to rushing to take the image or may be due to faulty camera settings.
|
Manchester Architecture(Deansgate)-
BestThis is my best picture from this section as I really admire and adore the affect of the water reflecting on the bottom of the bridge. The reason this has happened is that I chose I really sunny day to go out on this shoot, this has caused the glaring sun to beam down onto the shiny, reflecting surface of the dirty canal water and reflect a beautiful glimmer on the underside of the bridge. A factor that has also helped me achieve this image was my ISO which remained quite low to make sure the image wasn't to bright and the white balance which helped all the colors pop out.
|
WorstThis was my worst picture from this section because the lighting in the image is all wrong, this is partly to do with my positioning as I was under the bridge and the sunlight was reaching me, it is also partly to do with the camera settings as it appears my white balance and iso were too low.
|
Deansgate Building-
Best |
Worst |
This is my best picture from this section as I believe it is my most crisp, clear and simple shot of the tower. I like this picture more then the more complex images as I like how clear it was and it was simple and straight to the point. I like the lighting achieved in this image, this may have been down to the ISO I used, this was probably around 200, I think this is around 200, judging by the bright, sunny lighting achieved in this picture. I also believe a white balance of daytime was used, as this picture is bright and has a clear blue sky.
|
This was my worst picture from this section as, although the idea was fine, it looks as though the white balance and exposure was overall too high, this is clear as the image is too bright and it is unclear what is in the image. It also look as though I chose I bad location in terms of lighting because the images taken in this location were far too bright. As well as all stated previously this image is off balance and wonky and I think the ISO is way to high, maybe around 300.

Edit(on photoshop)-
Final outcome-
Within this edit I attempted to add a neon nighttime affect on to a nice city picture. As the color purple and blue is connected to neon I chose to make the image more purple/blue, I did this adding hue changes and changing saturation and colors. Once the colors had been changes I used the brush tool, set it too black, I drew with the brush tool over the sky making it pitch black. After this I added stars by creating a neon white brush that faded out and dotted it around the sky. Before editing this image I researched photographers that I could use to inspire my work, I found a photographer called Liam Wong, a street photographer and game designer known for his neon, cyberpunk city landscapes.

Manchester (Video) -
In this video, I aimed to explore the architecture within Manchester, focusing on mainly the city center. I begin my project by creating a plan, this plan contained a checklist of locations I believe would be most aesthetically pleasing - I also began this project with the intention of using the song, 'No Surprises' by Radiohead ; keeping that in mind while creating my plan. The mood of the song 'No Surprises' almost begins happy with a mellow, steady rhythm on the piano (quite high pitch), but the lyrics and singing in the song are quite the opposite, describing a depressing emotion and criticizing how society has made the subject of the song feel isolated and depressed - the instrumentation does begin to match this mood as the song progresses. With this plan in mind I headed out aiming to capture society functioning as normal, showing how little people smile while carrying out daily activities and how every aspect of society goes hand in hand with each other, almost one giant jigsaw.
In the video you can see how I have used light to my advantage, choosing a bright, sunny day to complete the shoot, focusing mainly on capturing the architecture in Manchester. I captured new, modern, glass buildings as well as also trying to capture traditional, old fashioned architecture, showing how they work together to create this wonderful landscape. As well as buildings I tried to be a bit experimental capturing canals and vehicles moving through the maze that is Manchester. In a lot of the videos I have taken, as I stated before, I went for a more dark, lonely feeling to fit the mood of the music, overall creating a more entertaining video and a more emotional, emotive video. Once I had collected all these videos I had to strategically fit them together in an order that makes the audience feel a certain way and also just flow together nicely with the music in the background, utilizing the changes in speed int the music, the changes in sections and the emotion of the music.
Once I had the order of my clips sorted I worked on editing and adjusting the coloration of the videos, once again making it fit the overall mood of the music. To do this I used an application called Filmora, I made the clips more yellow and darker to fit the depressing, mellow, but also happy emotions felt within the clips and music combined. Overall, I really like how this video turned out, there are a few areas of development I will need to work on, such as keeping my camera steady and in focus while filming, but bearing in mind this was my first ever shoot of this kind I am extremely pleased and hope this is only the start of what is to come.

Evaluation-
Within my architecture project I tried to explore a lot of urban city landscapes within my work, adding modern, contemporary edits to some of my best pieces of work. The theme I followed within these edits was a cool, new neon style of editing, taking inspiration from some exceptional urban landscape photographers. I began this body of work mainly focusing on finding cool buildings and other forms of architecture, but as I progressed I began focusing more on angles with my work and thinking forward about how I could edit these pictures to fit my theme of work, only capturing images that I believed fit the brief I had set for myself. As I researched the cool neon style I was going for I found talented photographers such as Liam Wong, I focused on these styles trying to imitate them, but adding my own twist on the pictures, such as, more colors and different styles of architecture, I believe I leaned so much from just studying and observing these great pieces of work taken by these outstanding artists, such as techniques like the rule of thirds, camera settings such as using specific ISO's and shutter speeds to capture certain types of images and as well as this I leaned great angles to take your pictures from to achieve the best outcome possible, overall really refining and improving my work.
Within this project I didn't want to limit my work too just Images, so I went out with my video camera and captured beautiful videos of the architecture around Manchester, I compiled these video's together using various editing software's to create a smooth, interesting video with music playing In the background, helping my work stand out. As well as this, as mentioned previously, I used the art of neon lights to help edit my architectural photographs, overall creating quite a modern collection of work. To make sure I was developing my work over the course of this project, as well as going out and practicing, I used various pictures from well established photographers in this particular field of work and evaluated them in great detail, this technique really helped me learn from these master pieces, using these new learnt techniques, formal elements and effects in my own work, advancing my own ability. The technique I found most useful over this project was trying to keep my work consistent and sticking to the theme of work I had chosen, this technique made it much easier to plan shoots and plan edits and complex edits, as well as this it also kept my work up to standard and overall helped me make my work meaningful. One of the most challenging parts of working as a photographer, was making time to go out a capture images and footage and once capturing the material finding time to edit and evaluate this work.
The final gallery I ended up creating was a contemporary, neon collection of images and videos, but overall I really like how my work ended up. I created many edits, explaining how I went about creating most of them, really showing my skills and expertise off. I also decided to show some of my work in video form as I believe videos are able to do something to the viewer that photos simply cant, like sparking certain emotion and creating stories. When I went in to this project I intended on creating a portfolio of neon pieces as well as raw, fascinating, architectural pieces, showing of my unedited camera skills. If I had more time I would work on creating even more edits in even more complicated ways, as well as this I would have like to have created more videos then I ended up creating. I feel as though, if someone who new nothing at all about who I was as a person, saw my work they would be able to learn and infer a bit about who I am as a person as I believe naturally photographers and videographers capture work that represents their personality and who they are as a person. I also hope the viewers of my work will gain a deeper understanding about the architecture around Manchester.
